2016 Sumo Wrestling Invitational Raised $14,000!!

United Way Brings the Thunder to Franklin County

Ottawa, KS- United Way and its supporters  formed an alliance to bring you Franklin County’s 3rd annual Sumo Wrestling Invitational on April 15th, 2016!

The 2016 Sumo Wrestling Invitational which was held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on April 15, in the Wilson Field House at Ottawa University helped raise $14,000 for United Way.

How the Event Works: The Sumo Wrestling Invitational is about strengthening our community and having fun with coworkers, friends, family, neighbors and colleagues. United Way challenges its corporate partners, member agencies, churches and civic groups to find a volunteer, co-worker or organizational leader willing to represent them in a Sumo Wrestling match. Once identified, these “Sumo Wrestling Champions” compete against other representatives from challenging companies and organizations.

Everyone in the community was encouraged to attend and cheer on the brave wrestlers at the event on April 15th!

For the audience’s entertainment, March Madness style brackets listing all the competitors were created and posted here on our website, printed in the Ottawa Herald and distributed by other participating organizations. The brackets include participant and organizational names of the Sumo Wrestling Champions. The brackets were turned in before the first two wrestlers compete on April 15th and donations to participate were encouraged.  The person with the most accurate bracket won $200 in Ottawa Chamber bucks from the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce.

Why a Sumo Wrestling Event: Money raised during this event will be used to help improve the lives of Franklin County residents by supporting the services provided by United Way and its member agencies.
